SciJourn Professional Development Application for Educators 2010-2012

In this round of applications we are accepting teachers for two cadres this year.

  • Cadre I will participate in the summer professional development in June 2010 and continue
    working with SciJourn through the 2011-2012 school year.
     
  • Cadre II will participate in all of the pre-testing during the 2010-2011 school year, receive the
    teacher professional development in June of 2011 and proceed with full implementation
    during the 2011-2012 school year.

The Summer 2010 Professional Development course for Cadre I educators includes a two-week
intensive training from June 14 – June 25, Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 2:00 pm (Topic:
Science Literacy through Science Journalism) and 2-4 evening sessions and 2-4 professional
development sessions during the school year (a substitute will be paid for). Additionally, UMSL
faculty/researchers will conduct classroom visits for on-site support and follow-up, as well as to
gather research data from your class.

Both Cadres will participate in the SciJourn program for two school years (2010-2011 and 2011-
2012).

Teachers accepted into the program will receive further details on the research procedures and
permissions, and we will work with your school and/or district personnel to obtain the required
research clearances (the research project already has Institutional Review Board approval from
UMSL.

Cadre I participants will receive a stipend in the amount of $1200 for the 2-week training in 2010
and the subsequent professional development scheduled throughout the school year. If you would
like to earn graduate credit for the 2-week course, you can enroll in Education 6408: Science
Literacy through Science Journalism I
, a 2-credit hour Graduate Seminar, and you will receive
the stipend by July 1 in order to pay the tuition and fees. Cadre I teachers will receive an additional
stipend of $400 for participation during the 2011-2012 school year.

Cadre II participants will receive a stipend in the amount of $400 for participation in the control
group for school year 2010. Cadre II teachers will receive an additional stipend of $1200 for the 2-
week training in 2011 and will have the option to enroll in Education 6408: Science Literacy
through Science Journalism I
, a 2-credit hour Graduate Seminar, and you will receive the stipend
by July 1 in order to pay the tuition and fees.

The minimum requirement for admission is that you are currently teaching in a high school.
